Fruita, CO - 2009 Trip

Postby Phaedrus on 25 Jan 2009, 11:47

We're going to Fruita! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) <== Jeff, Jim, Tiffany. and Corey

Jeff (with a "J") and I are heading to Fruita, CO in April for the 14th annual Fruita Fat Tire Festival. The festival is four days of riding, music, beer, and special events. Some of my friends from Minnesota went there a couple years ago, had an absolute blast, and came back with some amazing stories. This year the festival runs 23-26 April (Thursday through Sunday). We're heading out on Wednesday afternoon and coming back Sunday night. At this point, Jeff and I are the only ones who have committed (i.e., made airline reservations), but we're hoping to entice a few more of the group to join us.

Some Enticing Videos and General Festival Information

* The Clunker Crit! - Tell me this doesn't look like fun!!! I just can't decide if I want to ride it or photograph it!

* Great video where you can get a feel for the festival energy and kind of riding to expect. It features Supergirl... just to further entice Dieter. ;-)

General Arrangements (so far)

Air

We booked air for $357 per person from PIT to Grand Junction (via Dallas). (We clicked through to Trax using the ad above and they gave us about $5 that I'll put towards maintenance of the mudbloodandbeer.com site.) When we booked, there were 3 more tickets available at that pricing and schedule. Here's our flight info:

22 April 09 - American Airlines # 3360 - PIT (2:42 PM EDT) to DFW (4:40 PM CDT)
22 April 09 - American Airlines # 3545 - DFW (5:45 PM CDT) to GJT (7:05 PM MDT)

26 April 09 - American Airlines # 3560 - GJT (12:50 PM MDT) to DFW (3:55 PM CDT)
26 April 09 - American Airlines # 3851 - GJT (5:30 PM CDT) to DFW (9:10 PM EDT)

Hotel

We've reserved two rooms at the Balanced Rock Motel, located walking distance from the center of town. Each room has two beds, The cost of each room is $66 per night. Jozef and Helena run the place and seem like very nice people... and as you might expect, very bike friendly. Helena told me that there were also singles available for $50 per night. The phone number for the Balanced Rock Motel is 1-970-858-7333. Give them a call if you want to make your own arrangements, or let Jeff/I know if you want to split one of the rooms that we have reserved. You can see a range of Fruita accomodations here.

Bikes

Jeff and I are planning to rent bikes at Over the Edge Sports. I'll post details in this thread after I talk with them... hopefully within the next couple of days.

Car

We're also planning to rent a car at the airport. Depending on what type of vehicle we wind up with, we may need to rent a bike rack as well.

Registration

We'll do the $25 early registration for the event. The official web site states:
$25 EARLY REGISTRATION includes admission to the Thursday night Industry VIP Party, 1 free beer, SPECIALLY DESIGNED SOCKS, and the clunker crit. EARLY REGISTRATION ENDS, Monday, April 20, 12 noon (MDT).

Socks AND beer! This just keeps getting better!

Bike Rental Update

After several calls to Over the Edge Sports, I spoke with Robby (of OTE Fruita, not Robby G.) and reserved two Rocky Mountain Element 30 bikes for Jeff and myself (frame sizes of 19 inches and 15 inches, respectively). I reserved the bikes for three days, 23 through 25 April 2009. When I spoke with Sarah last week, she suggested that we bring our own clipless pedals with us.

As posted on the OTE web site, rates are $45 per day for each bike ($135 per person for three days of rental). The shop required a two-day deposit for each bike.

One other thing we need to consider is if we need a bike rack. That will depend on what kind of vehicle we get, and how many others join us. Jeff's looking into rental vehicles now.

Woohoo!!

The plane tickets have been purchased, registration is complete, and the bike is reserved. I'm so pumped! Looking forward to meeting the rest of the MBB riders that make their way out west.

FYI, I'm planning on staying until Monday morning, so to have another ride day before heading home (in case anyone else that hasn't already purchased plane tickets is interested). I'll be spending Sunday night in Grand Junction though to make it to the airport first thing Monday morning.

This'll be so much fun!!

Registration
I registered (for myself) online for the festival... don't want to miss those socks and beer! ;-)

Jeff: Don't forget to register yourself for the festival.

Any update on the rental vehicle?

Wahoo! Less than a week to go!

I confirmed our two rooms at the Balanced Rock.
Jeff's worked out the vehicle details and is going to make sure that OTE Sports keeps a bike rack for us.
We've had our bike rental reservations and registrations in for a while.
So what's left? Oh yea... check out the forecast:
